Notes on eating more veggies/starches (starting Saturday, Sept, 15)

Sat  9-15-18:   I have run into things by Dr. McDougall (sp?), both pros and cons, a significant portion of my life.  Up until recently, I never heard anything said about him and his ways that made me want to give them a try, because, the having so many starches per day plus a salad didn't used to be feasible most of the year, and, then, when I was older and able to do so, grains seemed to be making me ill.

I showed you a video, a couple of blog posts back, showing the basic idea on how to eat the way he is talking about while losing weight. It does not involved much grains or beans. But, also, in thinking about it, I started to wonder if 1) when I eat beans and get a rash, if it isn't simply because I need to do the low fodmap diet and/or allergy rotation diet, for a while, and, then things would calm down; or, 2) if the rash I get when I eat beans or eat more carbs might not, in point of fact, be a symptom of intense detoxification.

I'm not ready to take a chance that #2 is the correct one, because, if the detox symptoms are that strong, I want to slow that process down, anyway. But, I am quite willing to get back into eating a lot more veggies and little to no meat,  with some grains and little to no oil, no dairy, mostly minimally processed foods or not processed foods, and, then work my way into either a super long fast or the low fodmap diet (or a combination of both), which would culminate in a refeeding/retesting, that leads into a basic rotation diet.

In that light, today, I got various good veggies (broccoli crown, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, baby kale, zucchini), some fruit (strawberries, mandarin oranges, Gala apples), and some grains (pearl barley, millet, quinoa, buckwheat groats).  Not everything I got, outside of these things, was a perfect fit for the McDougall idea,  nor is everything I already have  But, it's a start and it will be better than what I have been doing this last month.

For lunch, maybe dinner, we had Lime Chili Ramen with roasted cauliflower, green pepper and chicken thigh lightly basted in Asian Barbecue Sauce (that's what the bottle says).  It was pretty good and definitely filling.  Pretty sure it was light on the calories and we both agreed (me and my son) that the chicken could have been left out, maybe replaced with  mushrooms.  It was easy to make, tasty and I feel better about life for having  eaten it.

Oh, there were also some baby kale, parsley and collard greens in there, because, I chopped up salad stuff  earlier, which was mostly those things, and, then I threw some into the bowls before I poured the hot water in.

So, today is the first day of my trying to follow McDougall's advice, though I will not be eating beans any time soon. Well, maybe the garbanzo beans I bought a can of, but, not the rest. And, also, of course, I am going to be following his advice, otherwise, to the extent that I believe it will benefit me and veering off sharply in whatever direction I need to, to get my body under control. But, outside of the beans and the amount of the starches suggested (in general) his advice sounds alright. And, maybe the beans and the amount of starches I can handle will change later.

Have a lovely day!
